'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there...'
My favorite Christmas decoration at our house is our hand-knitted stockings my mother made. It's a family tradition for us that her mother/my grandmother started. My mom, dad, and all of my siblings have one; as do all of the grandkids. The front and back each have a special Christmas picture, like a snowman, rocking horse, reindeer, etc.. On the front at the top our names are displayed, and on the back is the year we were born. I've always loved waking up Christmas morning to find my stocking full of fun goodies and carefully placed next to the gifts Santa brought.
When G was born, my mom asked if I wanted to make his stocking or if I wanted her to do it. I don't know how to knit - I do plan on learning someday - I only know how to crochet for now. Either way, I've always liked the idea of my children's grandmother knitting their stockings, so I asked her to do it. I chose a Train for the front of his stocking and a Snowman on the back. These things are so cute and special and filled with love, they just make me so happy.
I've always wanted to learn how to knit, so someday I will be making the stockings for my grandchildren too. It is a Christmas tradition I want to make sure lives on in our family. There are many things we do each year with family that make Christmas fun and memorable. Just being with family in general is what fills my heart. But it's also the simple, little things like our precious "made with love" stockings that make Christmas special to me.
What are your favorite family Christmas family traditions? I would love to hear them!
Merry Christmas!
